In 1968 the United States Congress passed the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act and as a result, an 84-mile segment of the Rogue River was set aside and protected. The town of Merlin is known as the “Gateway to the Wild and Scenic Rogue River” because it is situated near the beginning of a 32 mile wild section of the Rogue. It is the home base for many fishing and rafting outfitters and guides.
Nearby Hellgate Canyon has been the setting for the filming of a number of Hollywood movies. The Rogue River Wild and Scenic Trail begins just above Merlin at Grave Creek and runs 40 miles along the north side of the river toward the ocean. Another shorter hiking trail that follows the south side of the river leads down to scenic Rainie Falls, a place where salmon can be seen jumping the falls against the current as they make their way back from the ocean to the creeks where they were spawned.
With a number of lodging opportunities available, there is no reason for you not to stop and get your feet wet here in this magnificently scenic area.
